Research in Motion Ltd. has announced that beginning in the fall smartphone users will be able to load an application from the company that will replace a native Windows Mobile OS with the BlackBerry interface.

That will allow users of competitive devices to take advantage of the BlackBerry push e-mail service and other applications. The first iteration of the software will muscle out Windows Mobile 6.0, but the focus will expand to older devices eventually.

Users will see the application as an icon on the desktop that when clicked will come to life presenting the same interface users of BlackBerry devices have grown to know and love to access BlackBerry servers for e-mail, instant messaging, calendar and address book applications via the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) or the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS).

Users will be able to toggle between the two environments, RIM said.
