Former FCC Commissioner Kathleen Q. Abernathy has been appointed to the Citizens Communications Co. board of directors.

Abernathy – who joined the Washington, D.C., office of law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP after leaving the FCC in December – will provide counsel and advice to the ILEC, said Chairman and CEO Maggie Wilderotter.

“In addition, her knowledge of regulatory interests at all levels of state and federal government will be extremely beneficial to us as communications reforms continue,” Wilderotter said.

Abernathy served on the FCC for four years; her work included chairing the Federal-State Joint Board on Universal Service.
