SNET DG announced it will roll out its new SIPS suite of IP services this month. Not to be confused with session initiation protocol, the new Switched IP Services portfolio includes public and private termination of international and domestic VoIP traffic as well as a range of add-on services.
Dave Ioime, senior product manager for IP switching applications at SNET DG, has been leading SIPS product development for about a year. He says SIPS is a “nice fit” with services the carrier already provides, such as its SuperTandem Switch Network solution, which aggregates traffic at the company’s tandem switches in Connecticut. “Our SuperTandem does TDM. Now, we can take calls over IP.”
The new SIPS suite enables U.S. and international service providers to terminate VoIP calls throughout the world. SIPS VoIP Private Services offer VoIP terminations to the PSTN via a private IP connection/VPN. SIPS VoIP Public Services also offer PSTN termination via a public IP connection.
“You can come to us via VPN or over Internet,” says Ioime. “The only difference will be the SLAs. With the Internet, there is no guarantee.”
SIPS also offers access to optional SNET DG services, such as branded operator and directory assistance. Enhanced DA services also are available. These include business category search, movies search, driving directions, weather reports and sports scores.
Further, he says, SIPS customers have access to SNET DG’s database services as well. These include LIDB, LNP, CNAM, 8XX and ANSI-41 for HLR validation.
“SIPS expands our customer base and revenue,” he says, explaining the company expects to be able to service IP-based startups and legacy carriers that are implementing packet networks. “We can handle small and big companies with volume-based pricing.”
Ioime says the products are targeted to international carriers that want to terminate traffic out-of-country, but they also are available to domestic carriers. In mid-October, the company reported being in negotiations with unnamed beta customers.
