NEWS BRIEFS

* Apptix ASA gas introduced High Volume Messaging, a private-label solution for cable companies, regional ISPs and larger carriers to offer consumers and small business customers messaging services, based on Microsoft Exchange 2000. Services include e-mail (POP3), customized Web mail, personal Web pages, instant messaging and short message services among other features. Mailboxes cost 50 cents to $1 each wholesale and retail for $1 to $2. The solution includes private branding on subscriber Web sites, domain names, documentation and self-administrative interfaces. The platform can be hosted in either Apptix's data center or a service provider's facility.

* MegaPath Networks Inc. has added business-class cable broadband services to its portfolio of DSL, T1 and ISDN broadband circuits as a result of a resale deal with Time Warner Cable Inc.. Available immediately in 44 regional service areas in the United States, the cable service is priced at $79.95 per month complete with either static or dynamic IP addresses that can support virtual private networks (VPNs) for secure high-speed business connectivity.

* Covad Communications Co. signed a five-year wholesale agreement with America Online Inc. to provide consumer DSL services to the No. 1 ISP. AOL also plans to own a stake in Covad, which issued warrants to the ISP to buy 3.5 million shares representing 1.5 percent of common stock.

Kaufman Bros. analysts said they anticipate orders being provisioned in the fourth quarter with a greater volume of orders early next year, adding that AOL would tap Covad's DSL footprint to market service to about half of its 31 million dial-up customers.

AOL is not Covad's only huge wholesale customer. The company has partnerships with AT&T Corp., SBC Communications Inc. and Sprint Corp.

* Under a new wholesale agreement, EarthLink Inc. will broaden its dial-up coverage by accessing the Internet through the StarNet Inc. MegaPOP network in more than 2,900 locations in the United States and Canada.
