Charter Bumps Verizon, Chases AT&T, Level 3 in Ethernet

Ethernet cables

Charter Communications’ two gargantuan acquisitions earlier this year have helped the cable company leapfrog into the list of top Ethernet service providers.

AT&T and Level 3 (No. 1 and No. 2, respectively) still lead the Vertical Systems Group’s U.S. Carrier Ethernet Leaderboard, but Charter has surpassed Verizon and a host of telecommunications and cable giants in the latest rankings.

Charter slotted in at third, trailed by Verizon and CenturyLink. Comcast, XO, Cox and Windstream comprise the rest of the list.

The only company departing from the list was Time Warner Cable, which Charter consumed along with Bright House Networks in May for a combined $65.5 billion. TWC sat in fifth place in the February leaderboard, with Charter and Bright House out of the leaderboard altogether. Charter’s Spectrum is now the largest cable MSO Ethernet provider.

The study also noted that the Ethernet market continues to grow.

“The competitive balance of the Ethernet marketplace is evident, as more than 60 percent of new connections were delivered by CLECs and cable MSOs during the first half of 2016,” said Rick Malone, principal of Vertical Systems Group. “Our analysis shows a 17 percent annualized growth rate for U.S. Carrier Ethernet services for the full year.”{ad}

The study measures retail port share – the number of enterprise installations of Ethernet services. AT&T and Level 3 also ranked 1-2 in the February leaderboard.

Earlier this year, Channel Partners put together a visual recap of every step of Charter’s landmark acquisitions.
