Millennial-Dominated Workforce Dissatisfied With Application, Network Performance

InfoVista's Ricardo BelmarThat’s according to the results of a new report, Meeting the Network Demands of Changing Generations (access it here), by InfoVista and BT. The survey included nearly 300 senior information and communications technology (ICT) managers and decision makers across public and private enterprises.

Nine in 10 (90 percent) of respondents have received complaints related to app performance, according to the report.

Ricardo Belmar, InfoVista’s senior director of enterprise product marketing, tells Channel Partners the Millennial generation is dramatically changing the workplace in the enterprise. They demand full-time access to cloud applications and expect to use their own mobile devices everywhere they connect, he said.

“More so than previous generations, they consume mobile and cloud apps to complete any task as needed,” he said. “Business organizations recognize this as one of the top three stated major ICT trends: cloud computing (61 percent), information security (59 percent) and mobility (43 percent). The channel needs to be equally aware of these trends and deliver solutions to businesses that address all three trends to accommodate the Gen-Y workforce.” {ad}

Ensuring network and app-performance expectations often fall to the responsibility of the ICT department, according to the report. Of those surveyed, 94 percent agreed that the corporate network has become more critical. However, only about half (51 percent) of organizations have insight into which apps could have a negative impact on the performance of the corporate network, or have IT governance in place for app performance (57 percent).

The report points to a clear need for a governance approach to guarantee app performance and manage the user experience. In addition to implementing governance and tools to measure and predict performance (64 percent), many respondents also highlighted hybrid WAN deployments (47 percent) and moving more apps to the cloud while outsourcing SLAs (45 percent) as the best ways to make the most of the corporate network, and simultaneously keep costs low.

“The greatest challenge to the channel is delivering the solutions and tools needed to businesses that have decreasing IT budgets,” Belmar said. “Fifty-four percent of survey respondents indicated they are asked to deliver more with the same or lower budget. The channel will need to show added value in all solutions so that business can justify the budget spend. Given that Gen Y is now becoming the largest segment of the workforce in the United States, and the growing need for businesses to adopt collaborative work tools to allow this workforce to work in the style they choose at the location they choose, the channel will need to deliver more voice and video conferencing solutions than ever before, further stressing enterprise networks.”

… working with cloud apps in general (55 percent), bring your own device and apps (42 percent), and video conferencing and multimedia services (40 percent), according to the report.

More organizations measure end-user satisfaction (61 percent) than have IT governance in place for app performance (57 percent).

The most popular tools to deliver app performance and measure user experience include standard network tools provided by infrastructure vendors (64 percent), a service-management system (54 percent) and an app-performance management system (39 percent).

Piloting is the most popular way to predict the impact of new apps on network performance, cited by 41 percent of respondents, followed by information from the supplier. Some one in five (20 percent) can’t predict the impact at all.

“The most surprising results came when respondents were asked what the top applications deployed in the last two years were as compared to the top new applications organizations are planning to implement in the next two years,” Belmar said. “In both cases, unified communications (including Skype for Business), collaboration tools (Microsoft SharePoint), and cloud-based apps (led by Office 365) by far topped the list. As cloud and mobile devices play a large role in Gen Y’s preferred way to work, application performance challenges for enterprise networks become clear. The channel must be prepared to help deliver the appropriate governance tools to help business satisfy their newest users.”
