iPass Program Allows Developers to Embed Mobile Connectivity Into Apps

Smartphone and apps

iPass, the global mobile connectivity provider, this week announced a new developer program to help meet its goal to be on 1 billion devices by the end of next year.

The iPass developer program is designed to allow developers to embed mobile connectivity into their apps. In the first phase of the program, the iPass SmartConnect Software Development Kit (SDK) provides tools to integrate iPass technologies and services into Android and iOS devices and apps.

iPass' Gary GriffithsGary Griffiths, iPass’ president and CEO, tells Channel Partners that by extending the benefits of iPass SmartConnect to the developer community, “we significantly increase exposure to a wide range of devices and use cases.” The program creates new opportunities for partners and developers, including mobile network operators, mobile virtual network operators, app and OS providers, IoT device manufacturers and others, he said.

“These use cases are related to any device or end user that wants to take advantage of easy and secure global mobile connectivity, including access to the world’s most comprehensive global mobile database through iPass Veri-Fi,” he said.

The program and the SDK are aimed at enabling enterprises, operators and device manufacturers with access to patented technology that allows “smart, simple, secure and always-on” wireless connectivity in their own mobile apps or IoT devices, iPass said. Partners may also choose to access the iPass’ global Wi-Fi network of more than 50 million hotspots in more than 120 countries.{ad}

“The SDK allows ease-of-use features like automatic credential authorization, one-time password and especially last mile VPN security, removing a significant vulnerability associated with public Wi-Fi,” Griffiths said.

The SDK allows developers to bring to market cost-effective alternatives to cellular, or to bolster existing hospitality, airline, IoT and retail loyalty apps and hundreds of others, while providing access to data that will lead to “nearly unlimited opportunities.”

“We’ve seen tremendous demand for the SDK since we started disclosing early versions to select partners and enterprise customers in late 2015,” Griffiths added. “The SDK allows simple integration of the features and functions that provide secure access to the world’s largest Wi-Fi network, and has already accelerated sales through early adopters of the SDK.”
