T-Mobile Blows Into Windy City, Ties Verizon as Chicagos Top Network

AT&T’s reign in Chicago was short-lived.

After topping its “big four” competitors in overall performance for the first time last fall, the Dallas-based carrier fell to third place in RootMetrics’ latest rankings for Chicago.

The biggest surge came from T-Mobile, which jumped from third place into a tie for first with Verizon, increasing its score from 91 points in September 2013 to 98.3 in the first half of 2014. Verizon’s score was also up (from 96.2), but not as dramatically as T-Mo’s.

Sprint posted one of its best scores (93.3) in any of the markets that RootMetrics covers, but it wasn’t enough to get out of last place. AT&T’s score slipped slightly, from 98.4 to 97.3.

RootMetrics, the Bellevue, Washington-based mobile analytics firm, measures “overall performance” by results across data, call and text testing. A good overall RootScore means strong overall coverage and a good consumer experience.

Breaking Chicago down, Verizon and AT&T tied in network reliability, while T-Mobile got the nod for speed and data performance.

“In Chicago, the story we’re seeing unfold is the critical importance of reliability,” said Bill Moore, RootMetrics CEO. “We found impressive data speeds in Chicago, but speed is meaningless if you can’t connect to your network. Verizon and AT&T scored highest on our reliability index, but all four major networks had strong reliability scores, which is great news for consumers.”
