Hundreds Lose Jobs in Level 3-Global Crossing Integration

Level 3 Communications has confirmed new layoffs stemming from its Global Crossing integration.

Although she wouldn’t confirm exactly how many people were given the bad news last month, a company spokeswoman said the percentage of people laid off was in the “low single digits,” according to the Denver Post. Level 3, the multinational communications and Internet service provider based in Broomfield, Colo., has about 11,000 on staff. Do the math, and up to a few hundred people likely got the ax.

While this is not part of a phased approach and there are no plans to take similar actions at this time, as with all companies, we will carefully consider any separate workforce adjustments in the future if necessary,” the company noted in a statement published by the Post.

The news can’t come as a huge surprise; the company has previously said there would be layoffs as a result of combining the two companies. Level 3 announced in April 2011 that it would buy Global Crossing for $3 billion. Integration hasn’t come quickly.
