AT&T isn’t set to release its full set of fourth-quarter numbers until Jan. 24, but the company’s Mobility CEO couldn’t help but brag about its new smartphone sales record ahead of time.

America’s second-largest wireless carrier says it sold more than 10 million smartphones between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31 that beat the old record of 9.4 million set a year earlier.

During the [fourth] quarter [of 2012], we averaged more than 110,000 smartphone sales a day as customers flocked to our … latest Android, Apple and Windows devices," said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO of AT&T Mobility.

The carrier didn’t mention any devices by name, but said the record sales included best-ever quarterly sales of both Apple and Android smartphones. It’s probably safe to say that the iPhone 5 released just 10 days before the beginning of the quarter was a big reason for the record. But Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S3 and new Windows 8 offerings like the Nokia Lumia 920 undoubtedly helped push AT&T over the top during a busy holiday season.
