Sprint Sues Comcast, Other Cable Operators over VoIP Patents

Sprint Nextel Corp. has taken several cable TV operators to court over its patents.

In separate lawsuits filed against Cable One Inc., Comcast, Cox Communications Inc. and Time Warner Cable, the Overland Park, Kan.-based wireless company has accused the cable operators of using technology that Sprint patented in the 1990s for the transmission of voice data packets, Bloomberg reported.

Sprint, the third-largest U.S. wireless provider, reportedly prevailed in a 2007 trial against Vonage Holdings Corp. after asserting some of the same patents that are at issue in the current lawsuits.

The cable companies declined to comment to Bloomberg on the cases, which are pending in federal court in Kansas City, Kan.
