NETGEAR Intros Gigabit PoE Switch For SMBs

Networking vendor NETGEAR has introduced the ProSafe 8-port Gigabit PoE Smart Switch for smaller businesses. Designed to deliver enterprise-class performance at SMB price points, the managed switch, or GS110T, is a partner-friendly offering that combines a low port, high-speed Ethernet switch and support for PoE for under $400. The switch is being sold through direct marketers, e-commerce sites and VARS, with a lifetime warranty, 24×7 tech support and optional ProSupport Maintenance Packages.

The switchs high-throughput is well-suited to IP business applications such as VoIP, IP surveillance, and video conferencing, while helping to manage networked IP devices, including wireless access points, IP phones and cameras, with traffic prioritization to ensure the necessary QoS levels. And because of its price and functionality point, as well as a fanless, small form factor design, customers can deploy the switch to more small locations or servers.

Web-managed switches have been highly successful over the past two years, as they balance the need for advanced features with the necessity of keeping expenditures in check, said Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst, Enterprise Voice and Data for Infonetics Research. NETGEARs latest introduction rounds out their smart switch portfolio by extending the smart switch value proposition down to a PoE model.

Another key feature is the switchs eight dedicated PoE-enabled copper ports, along with two fiber SFP uplink ports. Its PoE power management features help customers to track and manage their power resources, allowing them to shut down specific PoE ports at a given time of day, saving money and increasing security at the same time. Power usage can also be prioritized by port, so that the necessary power levels can be dedicated for particular applications, even when the switchs power demands exceed that available. PoE ports are dynamically allocated automatically according to the power needed to support a particular network device(s).

Weve been working with the ProSafe GS110TP for the past couple months and the configuration and network management have been extremely intuitive and straightforward, said Andrew Roper of Virginia-based technology integrator, BCS Voice and Data Solutions. The ProSafe GS110TP is able to monitor VoIP, IP surveillance, and our normal and growing data usage patterns. It is also remarkably versatile and just so much more cost-efficient than using managed switch solutions. Plus, thanks to the compact size and low noise level, we hardly notice its in our office.
