ICANN Makes Porn Lovers Wait, Again

ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, won’t make a decision on the “.xxx” Web suffix until June. Maybe.

The agency, which maintains global oversight of the Internet, in 2007 voted down, for the third time, proposals to corral porn sites to “.xxx” domain names. But on Friday, the ICANN board said it will spend the next 70 days consulting about the “.xxx” idea.

Supporters of “.xxx” say the idea will help the adult-entertainment industry clean up its act, according to The Associated Press, and keep porn away from minors. However, some porn sites fear government intervention and religious groups fear legitimizing porn sites.

ICM Registry LLC first pitched the “.xxx” domain in 2000. Last month, though, an outside panel called the board on its rejections. ICANN then put the matter back on the table.

ICANN met this week in Nairobi, Kenya. It will meet again in Brussels in June.
