France Telecom CEO Hounded Over Spate of Suicides

France Telecom’s CEO is under fire for running a company that has seen 24 employees commit suicide in the last 18 months.

Various political groups are pressuring Didier Lombard to resign, but France’s Finance Minister, Christine Lagarde, says she has “full confidence” that Lombard can steer France Telecom through its workplace crisis.

More and more employees have complained of harsh working conditions as France Telecom transitions from a fully state-owned provider to one that also has private-sector ownership. That change has led to American-style restructuring, something few Europeans are accustomed to enduring.
