Palm Pre Software Powwow Could Lead to Mega Apps

A gathering of software developers might not sound exciting to everyone, but for Palm Pre owners, it could be the launching pad for a whole bunch of new apps for the smartphone.

More than 1300 developers in 80 cities worldwide will explore the potential of webOS – the revolutionary operating system that powers the Pre – at PreDevCamp. This grassroots software-development gathering will feature presentations, refreshments and hackathons where webOS developers can pool their creativity and experience to create new apps for the Palm Pre with the Mojo SDK, JavaScript and HTML5.

The App Catalog – Palm Pre’s version of the Apple iTunes App Store – reached the 1 million download mark just three week’s after the phone’s release in June.

The not-for-profit is hosting major events in San Francisco (at Palm headquarters), New York (at BlueSwitch), Kansas City (at Sprint headquarters), San Diego, and Dallas, and will feature live streaming presentations by A-list webOS developers and Palm engineers.
