MSFT: No Smartphone, But Mobile Cloud Service Now Live

There’s no smartphone coming anytime soon from Microsoft Corp., it said, but the software company will be embracing cloud services. And one of them is now in beta: My Phone.

My Phone is a competitor to Apple Inc.’s MobileMe service, which synchs information from Web applications to the handset. For instance, users will be able to automatically publish photos to online photo-sharing sites, backup and restore information from the phone online and access/update address contacts.

Microsoft will unveil My Phone—code-named Skybox–and two other cloud services at Mobile World Congress later this month, along with Windows Mobile 6.5. The “;” beta site is already live.
