Reports: Obama to Name Symantec CEO Commerce Secretary

Tech-savvy President Obama appears ready to appoint the head of network security firm Symantec Corp. (SYMC) as Commerce secretary.

Published reports peg John Thompson as the frontrunner since New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson removed himself from consideration amid a federal probe.

Thompson, Symantec’s CEO, raised nearly $200,000 for Obama during the presidential campaigns. Beyond that, however, he is a tried-and-true techie who knows business. He came to Symantec from IBM Corp. (IBM), where he was a pretty high-up muckety muck.

Thompson is slated to retire as CEO in April, although he’ll retain his position as board chairman. A move to Washington, D.C., would of course change that.
