Google Mirrors Microsoft Software Delivery Strategy

With its recent decision to take Gmail offline, Google Inc. may be taking on Microsoft once again, mirroring the software giant’s software plus services strategy, which combines premises and emerging software as a service (SaaS) delivery models.

Microsoft execs have said the approach satisfies customer preferences, but that software will not move exclusively to the hosted model.

Google said its move is to give users consistent experience when connectivity isn’t available.

Observers, including channel partners, say the move is an indicator that SaaS still isn’t widely accepted and has hurdles, e.g. security, to overcome.
