Verizon to Launch Femtocells Jan. 25

The second commercial femtocell service will soon come out from Verizon Wireless, using the same CDMA femtocell from Samsung Corp. used by Sprint Nextel Corp. for its AIRAVE femto service, which has been available for months.

Engadget is reporting that Verizon is calling it the aptly named “Wireless Network Extender,” available in Verizon stores and online starting January 25 for $249.99.

Femtocells plug into a broadband connection and extend wireless broadband connectivity within a 5,000-square-foot or so hotspot. It’s a cost-effective way for service providers to add backhaul to the network while improving indoor coverage.
